Root Canal Treatment in Tilbury, Grays & Thurrock

Helping to Save an Infected or Damaged Tooth

Root canal treatment is used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. It may be needed following deep decay, a crack, injury or problems beneath an existing filling or crown

.

The procedure involves removing infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth, carefully cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and sealing them to reduce the risk of reinfection. Treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and may require more than one appointment.

Where the tooth can be predictably restored, root canal treatment may help preserve it and avoid extraction. A filling, onlay or crown may be recommended afterwards to protect the tooth.

Why Might Root Canal Treatment Be Needed?

✓ Persistent toothache or pain when biting
✓ Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
✓ Swelling, tenderness or a gum abscess
✓ Deep decay or a cracked tooth
✓ Infection beneath an existing filling or crown
✓ A previously treated tooth that has become reinfected

Some infected teeth cause few or no symptoms, so an examination and appropriate X-rays are required before treatment.

Benefits and Important Considerations

Root canal treatment aims to control infection, relieve symptoms and preserve the natural tooth where possible. However, no dental treatment can be guaranteed. Occasionally, infection may persist or return, and further treatment, root-end surgery or extraction may be required.

The tooth may feel tender following treatment and can be more vulnerable to fracture. We will explain the likely outcome, risks, alternatives and any need for a final restoration before you decide whether to proceed.
