Choosing between Invisalign and fixed braces depends on your teeth, bite, treatment goals and daily routine. Both can straighten teeth effectively, but they work differently and are not equally suitable for every patient.

A clinical assessment is therefore essential before deciding which option is right for you.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign treatment uses a series of custom-made, clear removable aligners. Each aligner applies controlled pressure to help move the teeth gradually according to your treatment plan.

The aligners are designed to be discreet and should normally be worn for most of the day and night. They are removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing and flossing.

Invisalign may be suitable for problems including:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth

  • Gaps between teeth

  • Certain overbites, underbites and crossbites

  • Teeth that have moved following previous orthodontic treatment

More complex cases may require additional techniques or a different type of brace. Your suitability can only be confirmed following a full assessment.

How Do Fixed Braces Work?

Fixed braces use brackets attached to the teeth and connected by a wire. The wire applies gentle, controlled pressure to move the teeth over time.

Because fixed braces cannot be removed by the patient, they continue working throughout the day. This can be helpful for patients who may find it difficult to wear removable aligners consistently.

Fixed braces can be used for many different orthodontic problems, including some more complex tooth movements and bite corrections.

Appearance

Invisalign aligners are made from clear plastic and are less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Small tooth-coloured attachments may sometimes be placed on the teeth to help the aligners work effectively.

Fixed braces are more visible. However, some patients prefer them because they do not need to remember to insert or remove an appliance.

Eating and Drinking

Invisalign aligners are removed when eating, so there are generally fewer restrictions on the foods you can choose. You should clean your teeth before replacing the aligners whenever possible.

With fixed braces, hard, sticky or particularly chewy foods may need to be avoided because they can damage the brackets or wires.

Cleaning Your Teeth

Removable aligners allow you to brush and floss without an appliance covering the teeth. The aligners themselves must also be cleaned regularly.

Fixed braces require careful cleaning around the brackets and underneath the wire. Interdental brushes and other cleaning aids may be recommended to help reduce the risk of plaque accumulation, tooth decay and gum problems.

Good oral hygiene is essential with either treatment.

Comfort and Appointments

Both treatments can cause temporary pressure or tenderness as the teeth begin to move.

The edges of new aligners may initially feel unfamiliar, while fixed braces can sometimes rub against the lips or cheeks. Any persistent discomfort or damage to an appliance should be discussed with your dental team.

You will need regular review appointments whichever treatment you choose. These allow your clinician to monitor tooth movement and make any necessary adjustments.

Treatment Time

Treatment time varies considerably and depends on the complexity of the case, the type of tooth movement required and how closely treatment instructions are followed.

Wearing Invisalign aligners for the recommended number of hours is particularly important. Fixed braces remove this responsibility because they remain attached to the teeth.

An estimated treatment time will be discussed after your assessment, but treatment can sometimes take longer than initially anticipated.

Will I Need Retainers?

Yes. Teeth can move again after any form of orthodontic treatment.

Retainers help maintain the position of your teeth once active treatment has finished. They may be removable, fixed behind the teeth or a combination of both. You will receive instructions explaining how and when to wear them.

Which Option Is Better?

Neither treatment is automatically better for everyone.

Invisalign may appeal to patients who want a discreet, removable option and are confident that they can wear their aligners consistently. Fixed braces may be recommended when particular tooth movements are required or when a permanently fitted appliance would be more suitable.

The safest way to decide is through a detailed clinical assessment of your teeth, gums and bite.
